City DPW Reports Sanitary Overflow
October 22, 2014 (BALTIMORE, MD) — The Baltimore City Department of Public Works has filed a sewage overflow notice with the Maryland Department of the Environment regarding an ongoing leak of an estimated 30 gallons per minute into the Gwynns Falls near the 3400 block of Wilkens Avenue.
The leak was confirmed by a DPW crew shortly after 6 p.m. The cause of the overflow was attributed to stormwater from the steady rain throughout the day that infiltrated the sanitary sewer system.
An overflow of 30 gallons per minute would reach the MDE's reporting threshold of 10,000 gallons in about five and a half hours.
Citizens are encouraged to avoid contact with urban streams due to possible pollution.
