Safe drinking water is our top priority

The Baltimore City Department of Public Works supports the health, environment, and economy of our City and the region by providing our customers with safe drinking water.

DPW is the major water supplier for Baltimore and surrounding areas

DPW provides safe drinking water to 1.8 million residential and business customers, making the City of Baltimore the major water supplier for the Baltimore region. In addition to Baltimore City, DPW supplies water to these surrounding counties:

  • Baltimore
  • Howard
  • Harford
  • Carroll
  • Anne Arundel

Where does your water come from?

DPW maintains three water reservoirs. They contain the water that becomes your drinking water after we test, clean, and filter it. These reservoirs combined hold about 86 billion gallons of water.

  • Prettyboy reservoir
  • Loch Raven reservoir
  • Liberty reservoir

From reservoir to tap: fresh, clean drinking water

Baltimore has three water treatment plants:

  • Montebello I
  • Montebello II
  • Ashburton Filtration Plant

Combined, the water treatment plants produce up to 360 million gallons of safe and clean drinking water each day. The water filtration plants treat and produce water that meets or exceeds federal and state drinking water standards.
