Early Saturday, April 23 a large section of roadway collapsed in the 100 block of West Centre Street in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore. This is an area where BGE is performing conduit work. There were no injuries.

The cause of the collapse is unknown at this time. The Baltimore City Department of Public Works is investigating the possibility of a hole in a 72 inch sewer line and/or a hole in a 33 inch storm drain below the street. Various other utilities have been impacted, including a 6 inch water main.

BGE crews are on site to shut off electricity at this location so that Public Works contractors can begin asphalt removal to access the underground utilities. In addition, we will be doing closed circuit TV investigations of the storm drain and sewer line as we develop a plan to stabilize and repair the utilities and roadway.

Centre Street will remain closed between Park Avenue and Cathedral Street until work is completed.
